The following courses are designed to meet the needs and interest of the student body as well as promote healthy lifestyles. The Physical Education program involves a learning process that focuses on increasing knowledge and affecting attitudes/behaviors relative to physical activities.
Physical Education and Health Department
Physical Education (Grade 7 & 8)
The Physical Education program is designed to meet the needs and interests of the student body as well as promote physical activities that students will continue throughout their lifetime. This program involves a learning process that focuses on increasing knowledge and affecting attitudes/behaviors relative to physical activities. Units covered include aerobic fitness, group initiatives, field hockey, football, net sports, dance, weight training, invasion games, volleyball, basketball, floor hockey, lifetime fitness, dual sports, soccer, softball/baseball and Frisbee skills.
Health (Grade 7 & 8)
The Health program focuses on continually balancing the different dimensions of human needs including social, emotional, intellectual and physical needs. Content areas include personal health, safety and the environment, substance abuse education (drugs, alcohol, tobacco), growth and development, human sexuality, nutrition & fitness, communicable diseases, and CPR certification.
Physical Education - Grade 9
This course will include such activities as soccer, basketball, Tchoukball, floor hockey, aerobic fitness, dance, circuit training, invasion games, dual sports, golf, and Frisbee activities. Group initiatives (cooperative challenge activities) will also be included in this course. This course should be taken during the 9th grade year.
Physical Education - Grade 10
This course will include such activities as football, volleyball, Tchoukball, floor hockey, aerobic fitness, dance, weight training, invasion games, dual sports, archery, and net sports (tennis, pickle ball, speedminton). Group initiatives (cooperative challenge activities) will also be included in this course. Students must successfully complete PE 9 before enrollment is allowed in PE 10. Credit .5
Health - Grade 10
The Health program focuses on continually balancing the different dimensions of human needs including social, emotional, intellectual and physical needs. Units of study include: stress management, eating disorders, suicide prevention, CPR certification, substance abuse education, sexual health, healthy relationships and STD/HIV prevention. Guest lecturers from community resources and informative websites are used in conjunction with class discussions and small group projects to assist in educating students on current health issues. Weight Training/Lifetime Sports
Prerequisite: PE 9 and PE 10: This course can include activities such as tennis, volleyball, badminton, golf, and archery. Group initiatives (cooperative challenge activities) may also be included in this course. Community recreational facilities and opportunities are explored. Students will also have an opportunity to spend time in the weight room and focus on goal setting, skill development of sport-specific movements, as well as developing muscular and cardiovascular endurance, strength and flexibility. Students will design a program to meet their individual fitness needs. Credit: .5
Team Sports/Competitive Games
Prerequisite: PE 9 and PE 10: This course will include activities such as football, basketball, floor hockey, soccer, volleyball, as well as invasion games like knockout, ultimate Frisbee, stet ball, Tchoukball, and bleacher ball. Offensive and defensive strategies as well as officiating are included in this junior/senior-level course. Community recreational facilities and opportunities are explored. Credit: .5
